About the museum

The impetus came from the teacher and collector Max Bram: when an art association was founded in Rosenheim, he donated his works of the Munich School to the city in 1904 – on the condition that an exhibition building be erected. The building, designed by the Munich architect German Bestelmeyer, was begun in 1935 and opened in 1937 as a cultural center; the rear building housed the archive and the city library.

With the outbreak of war, operations came to a halt, and the collection was moved to Fraueninsel. A bomb hit severely damaged the building in 1944. From 1946, the art was temporarily stored in the town hall, exhibition operations resumed in 1949, and since 1952 special exhibitions have been held regularly, including works by Max Beckmann and the couple Caspar.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the building was converted into a modern exhibition space with storage and rooms for art education. Today the gallery shows several exhibitions a year – retrospectives of regional and internationally known artists, thematic shows, picture book exhibitions, and the annual show of the Kunstverein.

The collection of around 7,000 works ranges from the 19th to the 21st century, with a focus on the Munich School, Chiemsee painting, and the art scene of the region. Since 2020, the gallery has also organized the street art festival *transit art throughout the city.
