About the museum

The Städtisches Museum Rosenheim was founded in 1895 from an initiative of engaged citizens, typical of the wave of regional museum foundings in Bavaria in the late 19th century. Even at the founding, the city council and magistrate decided that historical finds, documents, coins, paintings, furniture, clothing, and musical instruments from Rosenheim and the surrounding area should be collected. For a long time, however, mainly rare and valuable pieces without a local connection entered the collection; since the mid-1990s, the holdings have been deliberately focused on Rosenheim.

The museum has been housed in the Mittertor on Ludwigsplatz since its founding. A gate already stood at this spot in the Middle Ages, which was destroyed in the great market fire of 1641 and then gradually rebuilt. Over the centuries, the building housed, among other things, a customs station, the bakers' bread bank, the magistrate's office, and the tower keeper's apartment.

The exhibition rooms were designed in several stages between 1902 and 2024, so that the tour also makes visible the evolution of museum design over more than a century. Since 1996, a city history section in the neighboring Gietlhaus has complemented the museum. In 2025, the museum celebrated its 130th anniversary. A comprehensive renovation with a new concept for the museum is planned for the Mittertor.
