About the museum
The museum is housed in the listed Ellmaierhaus on Max-Josefs-Platz, a 16th-century building that was exemplarily restored from 1980 to 1984. A so-called Himmelsleiter ("ladder to heaven") has been preserved in the house.
On over 400 square metres the museum shows the history, as well as the working and processing, of wood in the past and present. Objects and models explain old and modern techniques, complemented by videos, special exhibitions and museum education programmes. One focus is the development of the sawmill industry.
The exhibition builds on Rosenheim's reputation as a wood city, which goes back to the Holztechnikum founded in 1925. The museum is run by the Zweckverband Holztechnisches Museum Rosenheim, formed by the city of Rosenheim and the district of Upper Bavaria; a friends' association supports it.
