About the museum
Waldkraiburg arose on the site of a powder works that was built from 1940 in the forest near Aschau and Kraiburg. After the end of the war, mainly expellees settled in the abandoned bunkers and factory halls, founding businesses there and laying the foundation for today's industrial town.
The most recent of the municipal museums is housed in an originally preserved building of this powder factory on Schweidnitzer Weg. In six small rooms, the exhibition follows the development from armaments works to the present: one room shows how the bunkers were put to peaceful use after 1945, another describes the economic fresh start using the example of the design office of the pump company Dickow.
The museum deliberately appeals to several senses: besides objects and images, sounds and smells – for instance from postwar rubber production – bring the working world to life. One station is devoted to candy production in the 1950s, and at the end the focus turns to today's economy in the Mühldorf district and the region.
The museum is operated by the town of Waldkraiburg and, together with the Stadtmuseum, Glasmuseum and Heimatstube Adlergebirge, is one of the municipal museums. In season it opens on two Sundays a month with free admission.
