About the museum
Waldkraiburg emerged from a settlement for expellees built on the site of a former powder factory. Within roughly five decades it grew into the most populous town in the district. The Stadtmuseum tells the story of this unusual founding in a newly redesigned permanent exhibition.
The tour begins with the Deutsche Sprengchemie plant, where powder was produced during World War II. Photographs, original objects and a listening station convey the working and living conditions of that time. The exhibition then turns to the expulsion of the German population after 1945, which can be followed through video eyewitness accounts, luggage carried during flight, maps and photographs.
Further sections are devoted to the arrival of the expellees in the Pürten barrack camp, their new start under the simplest conditions, and the building efforts of the later town founders up to the 1970s. A museum cinema shows film material from this period. As a special feature, Peter Maffay talks in an interview recorded for the museum about his early musical beginnings in Waldkraiburg.
The museum is housed in the Haus der Kultur, which also accommodates the Glasmuseum and the Heimatstube Adlergebirge. A Förderverein (friends' association) supports the municipal museum work.
