About the museum

The grinding mill on the Nußbichl has been documented for over two centuries. In 1796 it is first mentioned as a small grinding mill belonging to the “Plaickengütl”; later it appears on the cadastral maps of 1812 and 1856 and in a description from 1840. In 1885 the Schuster family bought the business and ran it until the 1990s.

Afterwards the workshop stood idle for several years. In 2004 the market town of Kraiburg took over the industrial monument. The Kulturkreis Kraiburg e. V. (cultural association) took on the sponsorship, looks after repairs and keeps the workshop running regularly, for example on Open Monument Day.

The transmission and grinding machines are driven by a tub turbine from 1871, which is set in motion by the water of an artificially created stream. It is considered a rarity and, according to its custodians, the only installation of this kind still in operation in Germany. The workshop shows a knife-grinding shop as it looked about 50 years ago. During demonstrations, knives brought by visitors are also sharpened.
