About the museum
The Chiemgauer Schulmuseum is a private collection in the hamlet of Brandstätt, which belongs to the municipality of Tacherting in the district of Traunstein. An old classroom has been set up on the Schwoshuber family's farm, where original pieces from bygone school days can be seen – gathered over about four decades of collecting.
On display are typical teaching and learning aids from the 19th and 20th centuries, from slates and slate pencils to quill pens and abacuses to the typewriter. This makes it possible to understand what tools were used for teaching in the past and what everyday school life was like.
The museum places particular emphasis on letting children try things out themselves: they write on slates with slate pencils, try their hand at German script, calculate with the counting machine or knit a slate cloth. Visits are possible by appointment; the hosts like to tell anecdotes from earlier school days, and events occasionally take place as well.
