About the museum
As early as around 1900, history-minded citizens of Trostberg began collecting objects from everyday life and local history. For these holdings the city had its own museum building erected in the Schedling district between 1937 and 1939, initially known as the Heimathaus. The building, in the rural Heimat style, consists of two offset wings; a fresco from the 18th century, transferred here from the former poorhouse, is attached to the facade.
After a final extension in 1990, the collections are housed in 35 rooms. The former Ehrenhof (honor court) between the building sections was converted in 2003 into a foyer and exhibition area, today's Atrium, which also hosts concerts and readings.
The permanent exhibition "Lebendige Vergangenheit" shows local history, middle-class and rural ways of life, regional crafts, trade and industry, sacred art, historical toys, and hunting and shooting traditions across four floors. The house is considered one of the largest historical collections in southeastern Upper Bavaria.
