About the museum

The artists’ group SPUR took its name in January 1958 after a first joint exhibition. Its members were mainly young graduates of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts: Heimrad Prem from Roding, Helmut Sturm from Furth im Wald, Lothar Fischer and HP Zimmer. Until 1965 they worked together and, with paintings, sculptures and a manifesto of their own, shaped the art of the young Federal Republic; stylistically their work is close to Abstract Expressionism and Art Informel.

Because two of the members came from the region, the town and district of Cham have, since 1991, shown the group’s paintings, sculptures and works on paper in a museum of its own. Annual exhibitions each shed light on a different aspect of SPUR, supplemented by lectures, film evenings and readings. Since 1995, a large iron sculpture by Lothar Fischer has stood on the nearby Regenbrücke.

The museum is housed in the former almshouse in front of the Biertor on the Regen, a late Gothic building with roots in the 16th century, which, alongside the town hall, is considered the oldest surviving secular building in the town. The building played an important role in Bernhard Wicki’s anti-war film “Die Brücke”, which was shot in Cham in 1959; a small, newly designed permanent exhibition on the ground floor commemorates the filming. Since 2014, the municipal archive has also shown changing local history exhibitions there.
