About the museum
The diorama show belongs to the Altötting Marienwerk, an association at the Kapellplatz, and depicts more than 500 years of pilgrimage to the Gnadenmutter (Miraculous Mother) of Altötting. The scenes were created in 1957 to 1959 by painter and sculptor Reinhold Zellner with his wife Dora and the art painter Hans List. They modeled, painted and dressed around 350 people and animals from clay, and shaped the landscapes of the room dioramas.
In 22 elaborately lit, three-dimensional scenes, more than 5,000 figures, some hand-modeled, combine with building models, sculpted landscapes and paintings. The tour begins with the second Marian miracle, in which a boy falls under the wheels of a cart and is well again the next day. Further scenes show, among other things, the construction of the Stiftspfarrkirche (collegiate parish church), the plague, war and protection from the Swedes, the flight of the miraculous image, the "heilige Allianz" (holy alliance) of 1681 and the saint Brother Konrad.
In the house's film hall, historic Marian films have been shown for decades, including the Altötting Marian film, which tells the story of the first Marian miracle. A free audio guide is available for adults and children.
