About the museum
The Jerusalem Panorama Crucifixion of Christ in Altötting was created on site in 1902 and 1903. In 1902 the painter Gebhard Fugel founded a panorama company together with the architect Georg Völkl and the landscape painter Josef Krieger, which realized the work without a commission as a free work of art. Krieger traveled to Palestine for topographical studies. The circular painting was completed within a year in the newly built twelve-sided central building and opened on July 18, 1903.
The oil-on-canvas painting is 12 meters high, has a circumference of 95 meters and covers about 1,200 square meters. From the visitors' platform in the middle, which is reached through a darkened entrance, one stands in the midst of the picture. Unlike most panoramas, which traveled from city to city and wore out in the process, the Altötting work has remained at its place of origin. It is the only panorama with a religious theme preserved in its original form in Europe and is listed as a historic monument.
For nearly a hundred years Fugel and his descendants ran the panorama as a museum; it was fully restored in 1989. Since 1996 it has been looked after by the non-profit foundation SPA Stiftung Panorama Altötting, into which Fugel's descendants transferred the work free of charge.
