About the museum
The first beginnings of a Winterbach local history museum go back to the 1930s, when a collection of historical objects was handed over to the municipality; it was largely lost in the Second World War. At the end of the 1960s a new local history collection was created in the cellar of the old school.
The museum found its present home in the so-called Haus Dobelmann, a farmhouse built in 1776 over an older vaulted cellar, which was used for farming until the late 1960s. The Dobelmann family, who owned the property for over a hundred years, sold it to the municipality in 1973 on condition that a local history museum be established there. Volunteers around Helmut Nachtrieb Sr. furnished it, and it opened in 1975 at the first Winterbach Brunnenfest. In 1981 the project received a special award in the national competition “Bürger, es geht um Deine Gemeinde”.
The house combines living quarters, stable and storerooms under one roof and looks as if the residents had only briefly gone out to the fields. On display are rural and middle-class living, flax and linen processing, village crafts, viticulture and farming tools, and under the roof an extensive collection of dolls and toys. Since 1984 a parlour has commemorated the dialect poet Julie Kern (J. Palmer). The museum also includes a farm garden with a bakehouse, the potter's kiln hut with potter's wheel and stove collection, and a lapidarium in the former cemetery building. Everything is run on a voluntary basis by the Heimatverein Winterbach.
