About the museum

The museum opened in April 1987 in the building of the once renowned Gasthof "Hirsch" (Stag Inn). The estate, built in 1784, had fallen into disrepair and was slated for demolition. At the initiative of the Buoch Heimatverein (local heritage association), the municipality of Remshalden restored it over three years of work with the help of many volunteers, including the volunteer fire department and other village clubs. Today the half-timbered house counts among the most beautiful historic buildings in Buoch.

Since its opening, the museum has offered two permanent exhibitions. The first shows the red-painted pottery, also known as Swabian fine ware, that was made in Buoch from the 11th to the 14th century; in 2023 it was thoroughly redesigned and now carries the title "Unter Kunsthandwerkern." The second, "Dichter und Maler in Buoch," commemorates writers and artists who lived in the village or depicted it in their works. In 2017, for the 30th anniversary, this section was completely redesigned.

In addition, the Buoch Heimatverein presents two special exhibitions a year on historical and local heritage themes, accompanied by readings. The museum is run year-round by volunteer members and friends of the association.
