About the museum

Gottlieb Daimler, one of the pioneers of the automobile, was born on 17 March 1834 in Schorndorf’s Höllgasse. The Daimler family had lived in the town since 1660; the inventor’s grandfather had acquired the half-timbered house in two stages, in 1787 and 1806. Daimler grew up here as the son of a baker, attended the Realschule and at first trained as a gunsmith.

In 1852 he moved to the Polytechnic School in Stuttgart. In his workshop in Cannstatt he later developed the light, high-speed petrol engine that above all transformed transport. Daimler died in Cannstatt on 6 March 1900.

Daimler-Benz AG bought the birthplace in 1979, had it restored and has used it ever since as a museum and conference venue. The exhibition shows, among other things, Daimler’s journeyman’s piece, animal drawings from his youth that attest to his talent for drawing, and personal belongings.
