Eiermann-Magnani-Haus
Small museum in an originally preserved settler's house by Egon Eiermann in Buchen-Hettingen on the reception of expellees after 1945.
About the museum
After World War II, the Odenwald village of Hettingen, with about 1,500 inhabitants, had to take in around 500 expellees. The local pastor Heinrich Magnani founded a church building cooperative for this purpose, which later bore the name "Neue Heimat" (New Home). The architect Egon Eiermann, who had come to Buchen in 1945, planned a settlement of small, economically built row houses in 1946/47, which the future residents largely built themselves. The first 14 houses were inaugurated in October 1948.
The building at Adolf-Kolping-Straße 29 remained the only house in the settlement almost unchanged inside, with original doors, windows, built-in furniture, and stoves. The association Eiermann-Magnani-Dokumentationsstätte, founded in 2008, bought it in 2011; the Wüstenrot Stiftung took over the renovation in keeping with its status as a listed building, which was completed in 2016.
The exhibition was designed by the Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg. It opened on June 17, 2018, and tells of the everyday life of the settlers, the integration of the expellees, and the cooperation of the pastor and the architect. The museum is run by the association, which is also the owner of the house.
