About the museum
The memorial room is located in Walldürn's old town on the site where the sculptor Zacharias Juncker the Elder had his home around 1625. Juncker, probably born in Walldürn, created among other works the Holy Blood Altar in the town's pilgrimage basilica. His father Michael, his brother Hans and his son Zacharias the Younger also worked as sculptors; their works are found between Mainz and Bamberg and mark the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque.
Around four hundred years after work on the Holy Blood Altar began, a museum space was set up at Hauptstraße 21 to commemorate the largely forgotten family; the project was funded through the LEADER programme Badisch-Franken. An audio guide explains the room and around 25 sample works, including a detailed look at the Holy Blood Altar. The Walldürn artist Rainer Englert contributed insights into sculpting technique, and a baptismal font from Eibelstadt was recreated as an illuminated object.
