About the museum

Altheim is considered the green spelt heartland of the Bauland. Its heritage-listed Darrenstraße consists of 13 drying houses lined up along the Hellerweg, where unripe spelt was formerly dried.

A small museum has been set up in one of these houses. It explains how green spelt came about during the hunger years of the 19th century and provides information on sowing, harvesting, equipment and marketing. Display boards and a slide show cover the Bauland, spelt, green spelt and drying.

The museum and the renovated drying houses can be visited as part of a guided tour, with an optional tasting of green spelt specialties on request.
