About the museum
The Eisenbahnmuseum Schwarzwald opened on 27 October 2012 as an extension of the Auto & Uhrenwelt Schramberg. It is operated by the Förderverein Technikmuseen; the exhibits are provided on loan by the Regional Group South of the Interessengemeinschaft Spur II.
The museum is housed on the ground floor of a listed factory building of 1904, designed by the Stuttgart industrial architect Philipp Jakob Manz for the Hamburg-Amerikanische Uhrenfabrik (H.A.U.), where the clock factory's joinery once stood. After clock production ended, the H.A.U. business park was created on the site.
The core of the exhibition consists of hundreds of handmade locomotives and carriages in the large gauges 1, 2 and 5, displayed in long rows of display cases – individual locomotives consist of up to 10,000 parts. Two display layouts 20 metres long, including "Schramberg an der Schwarzwaldbahn" with around 60 handbuilt buildings, as well as several dioramas of locomotive depots from the steam era, complement the collection. Visitors can set trains in motion themselves at the push of a button.
