About the museum
After the city of Frankfurt took over the grounds of the former US military airfield in Bonames in 1992, a museum association was founded with the aim of collecting, restoring and exhibiting historic firefighting technology there. The association rented part of a former airfield building and fitted it out through its own labour; a topping-out ceremony was held in 1994.
On 26 August 2001 the fire brigade museum opened to visitors for the first time. In 2004 an exhibition room on fire brigade communication and signalling equipment was added. The museum is still run by the volunteer Feuerwehr-Museumsverein Rhein/Main.
The collection includes vehicles, hand and portable power pumps, trailers, models, helmets, uniforms, badges, breathing apparatus, fire extinguishers as well as certificates and specialist literature, thus tracing the development of the fire service. The museum's vehicles can also be seen at festivals and events in Hesse.
