About the museum
The Alte Pastorat (old parsonage) in Büchen-Dorf, popularly known as the Priesterkate, was completed in 1649, a year after the end of the Thirty Years' War. It is considered the oldest dated, listed agricultural building in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg. In the early modern period, the regional assemblies of the nobility (Landtage der Ritterschaft) also met in the Marienkirche opposite and in the Priesterkate.
Today the municipality of Büchen runs the house as a cultural meeting place. Concerts, cabaret, children's theater, lectures, conferences and weddings take place in the historic hall; on the ground floor is the Café zur Priesterkate, which shows changing topics from local history.
On the attic floor is the permanent exhibition on the former inner German border, which ran near Büchen, and its effects to this day. Another room is devoted to the history of the Delvenau-Stecknitz Canal, the "nasse Salzstraße" (wet salt road) from Lauenburg to Lübeck, along which salt was transported for centuries.
