About the museum
The Gildehaus stands on St.-Johannis-Straße and is a Lower Saxon two-post house. It had the status of a Großkötner farmstead and for most of its time served as a farmhouse. Whenever the Bardowick council wanted to meet, the tenant had to vacate the large parlour; in front of the house the property owners gathered for the annual “Eddag”. In the 1930s the building was converted for the municipal administration and received a wedding room.
Until now the Heimatmuseum has documented the history of Bardowick from the early Middle Ages to the present, with a focus on the life of people in the countryside; for a long time it was run by the Windmühlenverein Bardowick e.V. The borough of Bardowick (Flecken Bardowick) is now the museum's operator. The registry office continues to use the house for weddings in a historic setting.
After Open Monument Day on 13 September 2026, the museum closed for a comprehensive redesign. In future the exhibition is mainly to show Bardowick's important role in the early Middle Ages and the archaeological finds from that period; changing special exhibitions are also planned. Whether the name Heimatmuseum Bardowick will be kept is still open, and no date has been set for reopening.
