About the museum
The Zugpferdemuseum has existed since 2000 in the historic Annenhof in Lütau, a manor farm dating from 1726. It is run by the association Zugpferdemuseum e. V. The museum sees itself as a museum of working with draft horses and aims to show that horses meant far more than agriculture and carriage rides: for centuries they kept trade, the postal service and production moving, and during industrialization they supplied the "horsepower" before engines replaced them.
The documentation focuses on the period of industrialization and covers horse-drawn brewery logistics, riding and carriage post, commercial and industrial transport, horses in the military and in mining, pack transport across mountains, workshops such as the smithy and saddlery, and veterinary medicine. On display are, among other things, large beer barrel wagons and multi-horse harnesses of the Holsten, Schultheiss and Engelhardt breweries, and the Leichter Heeresfeldwagen 1, one of the few originals of its kind to survive.
Alongside the exhibition, the museum runs a "Lernort" (learning site) with offerings for groups, school classes and courses on driving horses, researches transport history, and with the project "Museum on tour" presents its own special exhibitions in partner institutions.
