About the museum
The idea for a dedicated carnival museum came from the Alb-Lauchert-Narrenring, an association of the region's carnival guilds. The Narrenring chose the Zehntscheuer as the site; it had belonged to Hettingen Castle, which stands high above the Lauchert, and only its outer walls remained. On these remains a new museum building was erected over about two and a half years of construction and opened in September 2006.
On about 400 square metres and two floors, the Narrenburg is devoted to the phenomenon of carnival across Europe. Masks and figures from Switzerland, Tyrol, Italy, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece and Eastern Europe are on display, as are figures from the Swabian-Alemannic Fastnacht. Modern presentation methods explain where the customs come from and what cultural connections exist between them.
On the lower floor, the carnival of the Alb-Lauchert region and its guilds is introduced. The museum is run and looked after by volunteers of the Narrenring; a museum council takes care of the figures and the further development of the exhibition. Changing special exhibitions take up individual topics around customs, costumes and masks.
