About the museum
Frelsdorf, now part of Beverstedt, had a special feature: from the 17th century into the 20th century, the farmers jointly ran a Brink cooperative. Sheepfolds and grain barns did not stand on the individual farms, but together on the Brink, a communal space in the village centre. In 1888 the site comprised 23 sheepfolds and 15 grain barns; in 1870 the shared flock numbered almost 1,000 animals, and by 1948 it was down to just 150 sheep. A shepherd looked after the flock, and the wool was washed in the Wollingster See and sold at the market in Beverstedt.
Of this complex, a sheepfold, grain barns, a bread oven, a well and an apiary have survived. In 1982 the district transferred the listed site of about 3,300 square metres to the then Samtgemeinde Beverstedt, on condition that it maintain it and keep it open to the public; in 1986 a Lower Saxon house was added as a local heritage house.
The Heimatverein Frelsdorf, founded in 1981, brings the open-air museum to life with events, above all baking days in the old oven and the baking festivals in spring.
