About the museum

The castle on the Bederkesaer See (Lake Bederkesa) is one of the few secular buildings in the Cuxhaven district whose history reaches back into the Middle Ages. Its origins lie in the 12th century with the Lords of Bederkesa, ministerials of the Archbishop of Bremen. In 1421 the lordship passed entirely to the city of Bremen. The stone south wing was built by 1460, the north wing in 1536 and the connecting middle wing in 1579.

Later the castle changed hands several times, from Sweden to Hanover and Prussia. In 1859 it lost its administrative function. From 1881 it was in private hands and for around 90 years served as an inn and excursion restaurant, at times also as a barracks or accommodation. Threatened decay and demolition plans ended in 1975 with the purchase by the Landkreis Wesermünde (Wesermünde district).

After the regional reform, the Landkreis Cuxhaven extensively restored the complex and rebuilt the part of the north wing that had been demolished, as well as the stair tower. Today it houses the district's archaeology museum and its archaeological heritage office. The exhibition presents three major research projects: the marsh settlement Feddersen Wierde, the Fallward cemeteries and the castles of the district.
