Heimatmuseum Vilsbiburg
Museum on the city's history and the Kröning potters' craft in the late medieval Heilig-Geist-Spital on Vilsbiburg's Stadtplatz.
About the museum
The museum was established in 1910 at the suggestion of the then mayor Michael Winkler, who wanted to make the town's little-researched past visible. Since 1928 the Heimatverein Vilsbiburg has run the house, and its work still rests largely on volunteer commitment.
The collection is housed in the ensemble of the Heilig-Geist-Spital, which Caspar Westendorfer endowed in 1476. In addition to the hospital, hospital church and garden, which close off the historic town square, there is a neighboring building. In 2000 a secco painting from the early 15th century was uncovered in the hospital church; its fifteen picture fields interpret the end times and the Last Judgment.
The focus is the ceramics of the potters from nearby Kröning, one of the great Old Bavarian pottery centers; about 900 pieces show the forms and techniques of this craft. Further sections on about 1,000 square meters cover prehistory and early history, city history, social institutions, piety, crafts and brick production. Recent archaeological excavations behind the museum brought to light finds on the medieval town. In 2017 the museum received the Bavarian Museum Prize. It is currently temporarily closed due to renovation work.
