About the museum
The museum is housed in the Ganztagsgymnasium in Osterburken and goes back to the collection of Karl Türschel, who gathered fossils and minerals from the Muschelkalk (shell limestone) of the region over many years. It still forms the core of the exhibition.
Most of the rooms are filled with fossils of the Muschelkalk. The centerpiece is a family tree of the ceratites, an extinct group of cephalopods, which is meant to reflect the current state of research. Panels also explain the layered structure of the Muschelkalk, and regional finds from the Quaternary show the most recent geological history. Further display cases trace the evolution of cephalopods, brachiopods, bivalves and gastropods.
On the school grounds stands the largest piece of the collection: a rock block of more than five tons, a shell reef from the Upper Muschelkalk of Jagsthausen.
