About the museum

Of the 16th-century moated castle, a staircase tower with a door of bar tracery and a long two-story building have survived. Since 1840 the complex has belonged to the municipality. Between 2006 and 2008 the castle grounds in the village center were renewed in a citizens' project: a friends' association founded for the purpose, together with local clubs and the fire brigade, gathered more than 250 helpers, who in two and a half years contributed more than 14,000 unpaid working hours.

Part of this project was the local history museum, which opened in September 2008. Its concept was developed by the association "Großeicholzheim und seine Geschichte", founded in 2003, which still runs the museum and opens it on a volunteer basis.

The exhibition begins with prehistoric and early historic finds from the Stone Age and Roman period, including a ceremonial axe of serpentinite, and continues via references to Celtic burial mounds and the early medieval fortification "Birk" to the history of the village up to the present. Separate sections are devoted to the two Christian denominations and the Jewish faith in the village, and to rural household life with furniture and household items, a museum kitchen, and the working world of crafts and agriculture.
