About the museum
The museum's roots go back to the 19th century: from 1885, a local representative of the Historical Association of Upper Bavaria collected the first keepsakes, which were long stored in a cupboard without any order. On 11 October 1908, the town opened a historical museum in the Nagelschmiedturm, for which citizens donated objects. At the end of the 1920s, the Heimatbund took over its care, and the town museum became a district museum.
In 1970, the district bought the Lodronhaus on Tuchmacherstraße from the state. Archbishop Paris Count of Lodron had had the building erected in the early 17th century as a granary for the collegiate chapter; from 1813 to 1967 it served as a prison. After the conversion, the collection moved here in 1974, and a support association took over ongoing assistance. An original cell with a wooden plank bed and iron shackles has been preserved and is part of the tour.
Today the house operates as the Geschichtszentrum und Museum Mühldorf a. Inn and looks after around 30,000 objects, from the remains of a prehistoric elephant to testimonies of the recent past. Permanent exhibitions are devoted to the region's prehistory, the Inn as a transport route and a danger, and the concept of Heimat. Since 2015, the museum has shown the exhibition on the district under National Socialism in the nearby Haberkasten, which also covers the Mühldorf concentration camp subcamp complex.
