About the museum
The Trachtenmuseum of the town of Ochsenfurt is housed in the Greisinghaus, a three-story Baroque building from 1717 erected by Würzburg master builder Joseph Greissing. Until 1972 it shared a roof with the town's local history museum, which is now in the Schlössle near the Old Main Bridge; since then, the Greisinghaus has been dedicated to costume. The house is one of the non-state museums of supra-regional importance in Bavaria.
On display is the costume of the Ochsenfurt Gau, considered one of the most richly decorated costumes in Lower Franconia. It expressed prosperity, festive joy and mourning: visitors can see the highest festive costume, the Marian image costume and the workday costume with accessories such as pearl gloves, prayer books, embroidered shoes and stockings with elaborate knitted patterns.
Luxurious fabrics such as cashmere, satin shoulder cloths, velvet and silk mutzen (headcaps), and magnificent garnet cross pendants testify to the wealth of the peasant women. On the third floor, the focus is on laundry care, the making of costumes and how costume is worn today. In the "Anziehkämmerle" (dressing room), visitors can slip into a costume themselves.
