About the museum
The museum goes back to the collecting passion of the Kleindienst family. As a child in the 1950s, the later founder came into contact with the Muschelkalk limestone and its fossils in the Kleinochsenfurt quarry; from the 1960s onward, he and his wife searched specifically for Triassic fossils in Franconia. An initial collection was open to visitors and school classes in a 60-square-meter room in the early 1980s.
When the collection outgrew this space in 1992, today's museum was created using only private funds and a great deal of volunteer labor, without public subsidies. It opened in 1999 and is a private museum without fixed opening hours.
Fossils are displayed over three floors, focusing on the Franconian Triassic, including ceratites, brachiopods, reptiles, fish, echinoderms and plants. An approximately six-meter-high wall relief shows the sequence of Triassic layers, and minerals are displayed in the basement. An exhibition on the Eibelstadt Lügensteine (“liar stones”) and a stonemason's hall in the outdoor area complete the tour.
