About the museum
The hammer forge, named after its last smith, is first mentioned in documents in 1814. Water power has driven the works since 1827, and in 1831 a knife factory and a grinding shop were added.
In 1975 an electrically powered forging hammer was installed, but it was taken out of service as early as 1978. After that, the Heimatverein Vlotho (local history society) worked to preserve the fully equipped forge as a living museum.
Since 1998 visitors have been able to look around the hammer forge and learn about the historic blacksmith's craft. On special event days the works are demonstrated in operation, and tours are available by arrangement with the Heimatverein.
