Heimatmuseum Vlotho
Local history museum of the Heimatverein in the Kulturfabrik Vlotho: 500 m² of crafts, cigar industry and daily life, April–October on the 1st Sunday.
About the museum
Collecting for a Vlotho local history museum began as early as the first half of the 20th century, but for decades the holdings moved between various locations. In 1979 they found a permanent home in the converted former Schöning cigar factory on Lange Straße, today's Kulturfabrik. At first, from 1981, the collection was open as a Heimatstube only to association members; for the town's 800th anniversary in 1985 it became publicly accessible. In 2016 the rooms were thoroughly renewed.
The museum is run by the Heimatverein Vlotho, which was founded in 1882 as a beautification society and looks after the museum on a volunteer basis. On about 500 square meters on the top floor of the Kulturfabrik, it shows evidence of everyday life and the working world in Vlotho, some of it over 300 years old.
On view are, among other things, a shoemaker's and a wood turner's workshop, spinning wheels, a furnished corner grocery store, festive and mourning costumes, the coat of arms of the old town hall and the "Sassex" camera built in Vlotho. Particular emphasis is placed on cigar making, for which Vlotho was once known; at events, association members demonstrate cigar rolling, basket weaving or spinning.
