About the museum
The windmill in Bentorf was built in 1889 by the brothers Karl and Hermann Ohsiek as a Dutch-style windmill. In 1928 it passed to master miller Karl Brink, and it has belonged to the Brink family ever since. The building was recorded as a heritage structure in 1939 and was officially placed under monument protection in 1984.
Between 1990 and 1997 the mill was extensively restored and structurally secured. It is about 14 meters tall, still has its complete machinery with two millstones, and is considered the only windmill still in operation in the Lippe district. In 2004 a bakehouse was added, where baking takes place on event days.
The mill is maintained jointly by the Brink family and the Museumsverein Kalletal; the NRW-Stiftung supported, among other things, the renovation, the construction of the bakehouse, and the repair of the cap and sail cross. During museum operation, the historic milling process can be experienced, weather permitting.
