Haus Malz
Merchant's house from 1684 in Vlotho with the original furnishings of the Malz family, now a monument museum of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz.
About the museum
The two-story half-timbered hall house on Lange Straße was built in 1684 by master carpenter Henrich Helle for the merchant Otto Heinrich Schürmann. It combined office, warehouse, and living quarters under one roof; characteristic features are the large hall with a surrounding gallery and the surviving hoisting wheel in the attic. Around 1784, a renovation gave the house its entrance gate, still present today, with a star-shaped latticed transom window.
The Malz family bought the building in 1834; they later also ran a country doctor's practice here and lived in the house for around 150 years. After the family moved out in 1985, the last owner, Dr. Ulrich Malz, set up a local history museum in it; in the same year the house was placed under monument protection.
Since 2003 the trust foundation Stiftung Haus Malz, under the umbrella of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Protection), has looked after the building. The furnishings of the historic doctor's practice have been preserved, as well as furniture of the Malz family from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The historic garden was restored in 2015/16; the house itself is currently being restored and is accessible only on guided tours.
