About the museum

The local history museum is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Bad Aibling, the so-called Prantshaus on Wilhelm-Leibl-Platz, which once served as an agricultural outbuilding of the Irlachschlösschen. It stands out even from the outside because of its painted decoration: above the entrance, a large colourful fresco shows the market town of Aibling as it looked around 1700.

The Historischer Verein Bad Aibling has run the museum since 1931. The collection tells how the place developed from a rural market town into Bavaria's oldest peat spa. Farmhouse furniture and household goods from the surrounding area – including painted chests from the late 16th and early 17th centuries and a cupboard by Anton Perthaler from 1766 – stand alongside bourgeois interiors, sacred art and craftsmen's tools. Separate sections are devoted to peat cutting and the beginnings of the spa.

Among the special rooms are the Marbacher Stube with Renaissance furnishings and a coffered ceiling, and the Kutterlinger Bauernstube, where the realist Wilhelm Leibl worked; a room with objects from his studio commemorates the painter, who lived in the Aibling area for many years. The museum also shows the complete workshop of a cooper and printing blocks from the former Aibling indigo-dyeing workshops. The archive of the Historischer Verein is located in the same building.
