About the museum
Naturerlebnis Bruckmühl combines two small natural history museums with the Salus Auwald-Biotop, a site on the Mangfall riverbank with educational trails and themed areas. The market town of Bruckmühl is the sponsor.
The Zoology Museum opened in 2000. It is a donation from Otto Greither, owner of the Salus company, to the municipality, and it stands as a flood-protected pile dwelling on oak trunks. On about 100 square meters it displays some 500 taxidermied animals that the photographer and bird expert Adolf Peschke gave to the municipality and that also serve as teaching material for schools. Video clips of living animals from the floodplain forest and live images from nest boxes supplement the display; a permanent exhibition commemorates Peschke.
The Natural History Museum was set up in 2006 and renewed in 2018. It shows collections from several private individuals, including animal phyla from around the world, butterflies and beetles, birds of prey and minerals. A special installation is the Klimawürfel (climate cube), a cubic-meter wooden cube made of native woods that explains photosynthesis and oxygen production in trees.
The outdoor grounds include an alpinum, arboretum, barefoot path, beaver management area, bee tree, energy park, fern forest, bat tree, fish ponds, herb trail, fairy tale forest, mint collection, swimming bridge and a bog area.
