About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Bad Laer is in the old vicarage in the village center, an Art Nouveau building made of the typical Bad Laer Piepstein. It is looked after by the Museumsverein Bad Laer e.V. (museum association). In front of the house stands a large Piepstein, about 6,000 years old.
The rooms tell of everyday life, crafts and history of the village: the entrance area covers the Laer emigrants of the 19th century, a kitchen shows cooking and housekeeping around 1900, and the “Gute Stube” (best parlor) shows middle-class living. The Piepstein room explains the rock, which formed from deposits of mineral-rich brine, and shows how, from the mid-1970s on, the brine led to the spa town of Bad Laer.
A separate room is devoted to linen crafts, with an 18th-century loom, the “Seidook” and blue printing. In the stone room, special exhibitions on the region rotate; in front of the museum a historic cottage garden with a beehive and a reading corner invites visitors to linger.
