About the museum
Laubach Castle goes back to a fortified complex built in the 13th century under Hanau rule. Since the founding of the Imperial County of Solms-Laubach in 1548 it has been the permanent residence of the counts, who rebuilt and extended it several times; the largest phase of conversion falls in the 18th century. To this day the noble family lives in the castle and manages it itself.
The castle museum shows treasures and stories from five centuries in the exhibition “Die Grafen zu Solms-Laubach”. The oldest rooms, with their late Gothic painted decoration, date from the 15th century and convey a sense of the family's way of life. Among the exhibits are a medieval silk fabric from the shrine of Saint Elisabeth, as well as coins and seals recalling the minting right granted in 1552.
Further stops include a hunting room with antlers, weapons and hunting equipment, and a tower room where changing items from the castle library are presented. The library itself is one of the largest private book collections in Europe and is not part of the museum.
