About the museum

Ruhland opened a first local history room on the market square in 1958. The collection found its present home in the manor house of the former Ruhland estate: an elongated building with an L-shaped floor plan, a solid ground floor, half-timbering on the upper floor, and a mansard roof, built around the mid-18th century and featuring a vaulted cellar. The building once served as the estate's administrative seat and the residence of the landowners.

The exhibition on the upper floor was newly set up and opened in 1995. Since then, the Verein für Heimatpflege 1889 Ruhland/Oberlausitz has also had its seat there; it researches the town's history, maintains monuments, and offers town tours.

The collection includes household goods and tools of old crafts, archaeological finds such as remains of a 10th-century corduroy road, charters and guild letters, and a model of reconstructed fishermen's huts. A coat-of-arms hall commemorates noble families who owned Ruhland. The manor house is also used for weddings and cultural events.
