Heimatmuseum Maßbach

Local history museum in the small castle of Poppenlauer: history to touch across five floors, from the Stone Age and the age of knights to 19th-century crafts.

About the museum

The Heimatmuseum is housed in the former Schrimpf castle in the Maßbach district of Poppenlauer and is run by the Heimatverein des Marktes Maßbach e. V. (local heritage association of the market town of Maßbach), founded in 1988. Across about 1,000 square meters on five floors, it collects evidence from Maßbach and the surrounding area. The tour begins in the "Ritterkapelle" (knights' chapel) with the grave finds of Eberhard von Maßbach, who was lord of the castle in 1456, and of Johann von Steinau from Poppenlauer.

On the middle floor, the route leads through a smithy and wheelwright's workshop, a kitchen, a bedroom and parlor from the 19th century, a shoemaker's workshop, a "Frisiersalon" (hairdresser's salon), a grandparents' schoolroom and a post office. Above these come farming with sowing and harvesting, the mills of the Lauer Valley, and a bake oven.

On the top floor, behind a rebuilt "prehistoric cave" with cave paintings, is the archaeological exhibition "Steinzeit zum Begreifen" (Stone Age to Grasp). The house's motto is "Steinzeit, Ritter, alte Knacker" (Stone Age, knights, old fogies): the focus is not on the single object but on its history and surroundings, and much may be touched.
