About the museum
The foundation was laid in the 1920s by three Münnerstadt collectors, including August Neumann. The town provided a room in the town hall, and on 14 October 1923 the local museum opened; in 1935 it moved to a larger room on the ground floor of the town hall.
From the 1960s the move to the Teutonic Order Castle was prepared, the former commandery where the Teutonic Order had its seat from 1240 to 1805. The complex, arranged around an inner courtyard, is shaped mainly by building phases of the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1970 the town museum opened there, named since 1980 after the Counts of Henneberg, under whom Münnerstadt received town rights in the 13th century. Under the teacher Peter Genth the holdings grew to around 15,000 objects by 1991, supported by the association of museum friends founded in 1976.
After the castle's general renovation was completed in 2004, the permanent exhibition was completely redesigned and reopened in 2007. It now occupies the entire upper floor and is divided into the sections MünnerStadt and RhönerLand: the Counts of Henneberg, the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, citizens and council, Augustinians, Teutonic Knights and crafts, as well as the meagre life in the Rhön. Changing special exhibitions, mostly related to the town, complement the offering. The tourist information office is also located in the building.
