About the museum

The Museum Terra Triassica was opened in 2013 by the market town of Euerdorf. It is located in a hunting lodge of the prince-abbots of Fulda built in 1598, which served as a forester's house from 1885 to 1973.

Its basis is the Sammlung Mainfränkische Trias Euerdorf (SMTE), which four amateur paleontologists have assembled over decades. It comprises more than 25,000 fossils from Mainfranken, the Rhön, and southern Thuringia, including scientifically described type specimens, and continues to be researched and documented by the collectors.

The tour follows the classic three-part division of the Germanic Triassic into Buntsandstein (Bunter sandstone), Muschelkalk, and Keuper. Lifelike dioramas reconstruct landscapes and seas from about 250 to 200 million years ago; the associated original finds range from early archosaurs and marine reptiles through fish and mussels to insects and microfossils.

The museum includes a garden with plants whose relatives already grew in the Triassic, as well as outdoor stations in the village. Outstanding is the geotope with dinosaur tracks at the Saalrangen, which is among the 100 most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria. Two geological hiking trails connect the stations.
