Josefine-Weihrauch-Heimatmuseum
Municipal local history museum in the medieval Schloss Neudenau with folklore collections on crafts, faith, and everyday life.
About the museum
The castle on the hill northeast of the old town dates back to the 13th century and was the seat of the Electorate of Mainz's cellar administration (Kellerei) until 1802. After several changes of ownership, the town of Neudenau acquired the complex in 1871 and used it as a schoolhouse for around a hundred years.
The head teacher Josefine Weihrauch began in 1933, together with a colleague, to collect objects for a local history museum; in 1951 the collection was first shown to the public. After the elementary school moved out in 1961 and the building was handed over to the town in 1964, the museum grew to several rooms.
At the end of the 1980s the castle was extensively renovated, and in September 1991 the museum opened in the new rooms. Since 1999 the Heimatverein Neudenau has looked after the house. On several floors it shows prehistoric finds, furniture since the Baroque period, denominations and popular piety, traditional farming and crafts, and a visible storage depot (Schaudepot); art exhibitions take place on the first floor in summer.
