About the museum
Museum Noviomagi belongs to the municipality of Neumagen-Dhron and is housed in the building of the tourist information office. It recalls that the town on the Moselle played an important role in Roman times as the fort Noviomagus Treverorum, and it sees itself as a small, fine museum devoted to antiquity and the town's wine culture.
Four rooms convey an impression of life in antiquity. Two films show, among other things, the location and extent of the Roman fort. Reconstructed scenes, such as a school scene and a hairdressing scene, depict everyday situations as they are recorded on the famous Neumagen funerary monuments of the 2nd and 3rd centuries; these were recovered from the foundations of the fort at the end of the 19th century.
Two rooms are designed with realistic colors and imitation frescoes. Together with a rebuilt hypocaust heating system and fragments of a Roman road, they show the high living comfort of Roman houses and the advanced technology of the Romans. Additional objects relate to wine growing, everyday life, and the influence of the Moselle.
