About the museum

The house at Hauptstraße 55 came to the municipality of Obrigheim through an inheritance in 2003. It is a two-story half-timbered building from 1910, with a shed next door. After the municipality had felled trees, renovated roofs and refreshed the paintwork, it entrusted the local heritage society with restoring the badly run-down interior, redesigning the courtyard and setting up a local history museum.

A restorer first examined the existing structure; then society members brought the rooms and staircase largely back to their original condition in more than 3,500 hours of volunteer work. On the first floor a three-room apartment was created in the style of 1910 to 1920. After about two and a half years, the museum opened on October 25, 2005.

In the following years the offering grew: in 2007 a room on farming was added in the outbuilding, in 2008 the society set up a shoemaker's and wheelwright's workshop in the basement, in 2012 a cooperage followed, and in 2013 the nuclear power plant room was expanded. On the upper floor, the house shows the early industrialization of the village with its gypsum mine and feather factory. Since 2008, a museum festival in July has been part of the annual calendar.
