About the museum
The museum shows finds from the Roman forts of Neckarburken on the Odenwald Limes. It is housed in the former town hall of the formerly independent municipality of Neckarburken, a striking half-timbered house on the main road, directly in front of the Evangelische Friedenskirche (Protestant Friedenskirche).
It is run voluntarily by the Historischer Verein Elantia (historical association), which researches the Romans' presence and preserves and exhibits the finds made in Neckarburken. In 2018 the museum was fundamentally redesigned with funding from the LEADER regional development program Neckartal-Odenwald and other sponsors.
The main pieces include the almost completely preserved equestrian figure of Jupiter with the vanquished giant, a military diploma from 134 AD, and a large inscription tablet from the west gate of the Numerus fort, which names the Numerus Brittonum and the oldest name for the Elz valley. Information boards, graphics and display cases explain the Roman presence along the Limes. The association also offers guided tours in the field and along the Limes, as well as Roman festivals.
