About the museum
For generations, Breitscheid in the Lahn-Dill district was a place of clay extraction and pottery craft. Both industries shaped the region and are part of the more recent history of the municipality. The Töpfermuseum commemorates this and combines traditional utility ware with modern ceramics. Breitscheid’s pottery culture is part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The collection shows Breitscheid pottery from the 18th to the 21st century, including utility ceramics such as jugs, bowls and molds for Eierkäse, as well as clay water pipes from around 260 years. A clay-pit model and historical tools explain how clay was extracted and processed. Technical ceramics for industry, medicine and space technology show the versatility of the material, and figures of the Terracotta Army from Xi’an extend the exhibition well beyond the region.
The tour can be complemented with demonstrations and hands-on activities in the potter’s workshop, where visitors can throw on the potter’s wheel or model with clay. Every year on May 1, a pottery market takes place in and around the museum; in November there is an Advent exhibition.
