Small local museum in Frammersbach on the history of carters and home tailoring in the Spessart.

About the museum

The museum was set up in 2003 by the market municipality of Frammersbach to show the town's rich local history. The municipality bought a building and, with advice from the Spessartmuseum Lohr and the Spessart archaeological project, developed a concept. The house is looked after by the museum association of the market municipality.

It is housed in a former residential house in the district of Herbertshain. With an outhouse privy, a kitchen garden and a stable, the building gives an impression of living conditions in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Around 1900 a paper dealer lived here; in the 1950s a home-tailoring family did. Foundation walls and archaeological finds in the forecourt point to origins in the late Middle Ages; wooden beams date from the 17th century.

Across two floors with just over 100 square meters of exhibition space, the museum covers the two trades that brought Frammersbach prosperity for centuries. On the first floor the history of the carters is presented: from the 15th century they transported goods across Europe. The upper floor is devoted to home tailoring, which spread through the town from the late 19th century on the model of Aschaffenburg. The house also presents new findings from local history research.
