About the museum
The Waldgeschichtliches Museum (Museum of Forest History) is located in the middle of the village center of St. Oswald, near the former monastery. It opened in the 1980s and is now operated by the Bavarian Forest National Park administration, which has modernized the building and reopened it with a new exhibition.
The permanent exhibition spans three floors and around 1,000 square meters. It covers the interplay of forest and people: from the geological beginnings of the region through glass manufacturing and forestry to the creation of the protected area. It also offers insights into customs, contemporary history, literature and music.
A large part of the exhibits is multimedia. Eyewitness accounts can be listened to in audio armchairs, and a walk-in tree with a root cave and a bird's nest connects all three levels. The redesign is aimed especially at children, young people, school classes and families.
